I started with a cardstock template for each of the three major holes.
I bent the largest panel over my thigh. I was trying to get it perfect, and then I remembered that I'm an amateur who watches car restoration television. One of the tips I recall was to get it close and then alternate between welding and hammering/bending to get it to fit. As long as the panel itself is a close fit, this will work.I've welded up half at this point. The process is working, for the most part.
A few gaps in the seams, but nothing I can't weld up later.
For the little ones, I used my holder magnets to assess if the panel itself will sit level in the hole it's supposed to patch.
Then I sanded down to bare metal to give me some good metal to weld to.
To avoid annoying the neighbors too much with the loudest tool I own (the grinder), I just painted these patches with the self-etching primer. Once the tub is on the body and in the garage, I'll go to town. The blue tarp in the background is my safety tent, which is draped over the top of the swing set. I'm expecting rain soon, so this will be a semi-permanent setup to avoid any additional moisture.
